With summer, comes a new schedule for the older kiddos. We have them for a week on, week off schedule, and have had this in place for a few years now. We like this a lot better than the 4-3, 3-4 schedule that we used to have, as it is a lot less running around for everyone involved. There are drawbacks too, of course, like having to go a full week without seeing them. This is especially hard on Luca, who worships the ground Caleb and Kyleigh walk on :)
A lot of planning goes into our summers with a schedule like this, because we like to plan as many activities as we can on the weeks that the older kids are with us. Luckily, we finalize the summer schedule months in advance, which really helps with the planning. This year, we have our big vacation to Disney World! We also want to go camping a few times, as well as a trip to Presque Isle.
Over the years, we have found that it reduces a lot of stress on the kids if they know when they will be at each house. I have a big calendar above our desk in the kitchen, where I circle the days that they are with us. I also write each child’s activities on the calendar, as well as appointments, vacations, day trips, etc. And then I color-code each family member. It not only keeps me organized, but it gives the older kids peace of mind as well.
I would love to know how other blended families handle your summer schedules! How do you plan vacations and trips?
