Today I am partnering with OshKosh to share our ten favorite holiday traditions! I have always loved Christmas and everything that comes with it, and I’ve always tried to instill that same love in my children. We definitely try to make Christmas more about spending time with family and friends and memorable experiences, than just gifts. So here are some of the ways we try to do that.
New Christmas Outfits
I love shopping for coordinated Christmas outfits for the kids, and OshKosh always has such an adorable selection! I mean, look at Enzo’s suspenders! And those little boots – perfect. I also love how Luca’s jeans are lined. They keep him warm during this cold Pennsylvania Winter! OshKosh is a one-stop shop for all of their clothes and accessories. Plus, their outfits can be worn for many occasions. From their holiday sing-alongs at school to visits to our town’s Christmas tree to Christmas Eve with our family. Perfect for all of our holiday traditions!
A Visit to Downtown and the Christmas Tree
I love the town that we live in. It has a really great Downtown area, which is one of the reasons we fell in love with it. Every year, they have a light-up night where they light up the big tree and all of the stores are beautifully decorated for Christmas. There is even a parade with Santa! The kids love going to see the tree and all of the decorations. So many advantages of living in a small town!
Baking Christmas Cookies
Every year growing up, my sister and I would help my mom bake Christmas cookies. We always made the same kinds, and it was something we absolutely loved doing. And now I’m carrying on the tradition with my kids! We make a few of the same kinds that I made growing up, plus we’ve added in some new ones, per Daddy’s request.
A Trip to the Christmas Tree Farm
For the past two years, we have taken a trip to Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farm in Indiana, PA. It is truly a magical place! You take a horse-drawn wagon ride to the trees, where you can pick out the perfect one. You can either cut it down yourself or have them cut it for you. While we are there, the kids visit with Santa and we enjoy their delicious, homemade hot chocolate while we wait for our tree to get loaded up. They also have a shop with really unique Christmas ornaments, and last year each kiddo picked one for our tree. I highly recommend making a trip there if you are local! This definitely tops the kid’s favorite holiday traditions!
Mailing Letters to Santa
For the last ten years, we have had the kids write their Christmas lists to Santa and then we take them to be mailed. The amazing part – Santa writes back! The kids get SO excited when their letters from Santa arrive in the mail. There is always something about the gifts they asked for, plus a special message from Santa. So magical!
Decorating the Christmas Tree
This is hands-down, my favorite part of Christmas. We make a whole night of decorating our Christmas tree. We play Christmas music, drink hot chocolate, and really take our time putting on the lights, ribbon, ornaments, and the angel that tops our tree. I love taking out each ornament, and thinking about the memory behind it.
A New Ornament for the Tree
Every year, each kiddo gets to pick a new ornament for our Christmas tree. We usually have a theme that goes along with it. Last year, each kid picked a handmade bottle brush animal ornament from the Christmas Tree Farm. So unique! One year, each kiddo chose an ornament that displayed their favorite sport or activity. It’s so fun to see each child’s personality come through in their pick of an ornament. We might have to get a second tree soon – with five kids, the ornaments are adding up fast!
Family Photo Session
My best friend is a photographer, and every year we have her take pictures of our family that we will include on our Christmas card. This is definitely one of my favorite holiday traditions, because I can enjoy beautiful new photos of our family for the whole year. A great place to shop for kid’s clothes for these pictures – OshKosh! You can find so many reasonably priced, age-appropriate options. And it makes it very easy to coordinate!
Christmas Movie Nights
We love watching Christmas movies throughout the month of December! We will make popcorn and hot chocolate, and snuggle up under about a million blankets. A perfect Friday night with the family. Some of our favorite Christmas movies are: Elf, Home Alone (the kid’s favorite), White Christmas (my favorite), Christmas Vacation (the husband’s favorite), It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and The Santa Claus.
When our two oldest were fairly little, we started the tradition of buying new Christmas jammies every year for the kids. They LOVE this. I usually try to have everyone matching (I’m not sure if they love this, but I sure do)! Especially my three little guys. Who can resist three little cuties in matching jammies?! There are so many adorable holiday pajama options at OshKosh, so make sure you check them out!
